As Many of you know, life for Denise Jackson did not start easily. Born a crack-baby, the odds were stacked against her before she even entered the world. But even that was not enough to squash her dreams or dim her light. At the tender age of 4, her talents were already coming through when she began singing in her church choir. The gospel roots she acquired at such an early age became even more evident as she grew.
In fourth grade she performed in the auditorium for the student body. This helped prepare her for the experience of performing in various talent shows throughout middle school, which led to her first public performance at age 14. That same year, she was selected to compete in the Talent World Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In 2006, she wowed the judges on American Idol with her soulful rendition of "And I am Telling You I am Not Going" (check out her video and music clip to hear her version), and now she is getting ready to audition for them again, this time hoping to make it to the top ten.
Her musical influences include Tina Turner, Beyonce Knowles, and Lauryn Hill.
Despite her accomplishments, life has not been all sunshine and roses for Denise. She grew up in the projects of Chicago before moving to Madison, Wisconsin at age nine. She could easily have given up on herself or used her state at birth as an excuse to avoid trying. But hers is not a story of self-pity. She's always done what she's needed to do to move herself closer to her dreams and goals. She works hard, doesn't expect handouts, and wants to show the world what she is capable of. Her life is as inspirational as her voice, and she's only beginning to tell her story!
